Sandy Creek Nature Center is located north of Athens and contains 225 acres of woodlands and wetlands, a premiere birding location for locals and visitors. Sandy Creek Nature Center also includes the four-mile long Cook's Trail, which follows the floodplain surrounding the small Sandy Creek and ends farther north at Sandy Creek Park, and the Nature Center also has trails which connect to the North Oconee River Greenway. Sandy Creek Nature Center is also where ORAS holds its monthly meetings.
Aside from the miles of trails and diverse habitats to satisfy even the most hardcore birders, Sandy Creek Nature Center offers environmental education programs for every age, including a youth summer camp and Learning In Retirement classes. If you are interested in environmental education, this is the go-to place in Athens.
